When we launched KIZ Digital, the vision was bold yet clear: to transform how Zambians engage with insurance. Insurance has too often been seen as complicated, time-consuming, and distant. For decades, access to insurance in Zambia has been hindered by paperwork, face-to-face meetings, and slow turnaround times. Many simply opted out. At the same time, the digital world has grown rapidly. By early 2024, Zambia had over 16.4 million active mobile connections, covering nearly 79% of the population. Yet, internet usage was much lower—just 31%. (datareportal.com)

Insurance penetration here remains among the lowest in Africa—between 1.1% and 1.4% of GDP, with non-life penetration around 0.6% (africa-re.com, pwc.com). Compare this to the African average of 2.78% and the potential becomes clear.

Zambia is increasingly a mobile-first society. Mobile money usage soared from 14% in 2015 to nearly 59% in 2020, while formal banking remained stuck at around 21% (voxdev.org). More than half of adults can reach a mobile money agent within a 30-minute walk—compared to just 18% for banks.
That’s why KIZ Digital was built for mobility. Whether it’s motor or liability cover, customers can secure insurance wherever they are, whenever they need it. No paperwork. No waiting. Just straightforward access. What also sets KIZ Digital apart is the way it prices insurance. Instead of a “one-size-fits-all” approach, the platform uses individual risk factors to determine fairer premiums. For motor insurance, elements such as the age of the driver, the age of the vehicle, and location all play a role. For liability cover, pricing reflects the type of business and the number of professionals involved. This means customers get cover that is tailored to their actual risk profile—transparent, relevant, and equitable.
As the industry digitises, customers must remain at the centre. Digital solutions should deliver not just speed and convenience but also trust and value. By listening to customer needs and embedding feedback, platforms like KIZ Digital can drive inclusion and build lasting loyalty.
