Klapton Insurance Zambia

Dr Leonard Kalinde

Dr Leonard Nkole Kalinde is currently a Partner (Banking and Finance and Capital Markets) at Messrs Equitas Legal Practitioners. Among his many academic and professional qualifications holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with Merit from the University of Zambia, a Master’s Degree in International Business Law (LLM) from the Washington College of Law of the American University and a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in International Economic Law from the University of Kent. He is also an Advocate of the High Court for Zambia, a gazetted Public Prosecutor, a Chartered Arbitrator and a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (CAMS) with the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist.

Dr Kalinde, has over 25 years’ experience at the Zambian legal bar and specialises in the following fields: financial services law; anti-money laundering and terrorist financing law; corporate governance; insolvency and liquidation law; alternative dispute settlement; corporate compliance, risk management; and the law on derivatives; and the law on artificial intelligence.

Dr Kalinde joined the Bank of Zambia in 2001 as Legal Officer in the Bank Secretariat Department before rising to the positions of Senior Legal Officer, Assistant Bank Secretary in charge of litigation and finally Director of the Legal Services Department, which position was later renamed as General Counsel.

As General Counsel, Dr Kalinde was the Chief Legal Advisor to the Bank of Zambia and was responsible for the provision of comprehensive and centralized key in-house legal services to the Bank for all its operational and administrative matters.

He was the chairperson of the Bank of Zambia Legal Reform Committee and also served as the Chairperson of the SADC Committee of Central Bank Governors (CCBG) Legal Committee for six years. Dr Kalinde also previously served as a Lecturer in the School of Law at the University of Zambia and practiced law in a private practice.

Robert Bygrave

Rob qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992 with an accountancy firm based in Bedfordshire. Post qualification, he moved into the Financial Services arena where he has remained for his entire subsequent working career, into a finance role at the Equitable Life Assurance Society. 

After a couple of years there he moved to a role in the City with Deutsche Bank where he spent 5 years in the role of Head of Management and Financial Reporting for the London Branch. 

Whilst at Deutsche he was also heavily involved in a number of projects including the NYSE listing and SAP implementation.

After leaving Deutsche Bank he moved to a role with CSC, where he headed the finance function for outsourced finance, back office, and actuarial services for a number of large financial institutions and then took up a role at Raiffaisen International Bank where he was Head of Finance for the London branch which primarily traded FX, Bond and Money Market products.

Subsequently, he worked for Standard Chartered Bank, where he was Head of Finance for Wholesale Banking for Africa, a role in which he was responsible for the finance functions in 14 countries pan-Africa including Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Africa, with over 25 staff reporting to him.

He then spent over 5 years at Altium Capital Limited, a corporate finance investment house, where he was Group Financial Controller and Interim Finance Director, with responsibility for all financial, management and regulatory reporting, together with a number of system implementations and set up back-office support to incubation businesses.

For the past 5 years, he has been Group Finance Director at Global Ridgeway Holdings Limited, a group of companies which hold investments globally in insurance companies, insurance brokers and property. He joined the business in its early stages and implemented the entire back-office function. Whilst in this role he has been heavily involved in due diligence work on assessing potential investments and also assisted in successfully listed a Group company on a European Stock Exchange.

Jennifer

Jennifer Estrougo

Jennifer brings over 14 years of both legal and insurance experience, with a wide range of knowledge managing high profile insurance claims, insurance disputes in and out of courts and multipart coverage issues.

She also specializes in advising insurers on policy-wording interpretation, insurance risk assessment and is well acquainted with insurers, reinsurers, and brokers around the world.

Jennifer is a certified attorney since 2008, by the Israeli BAR association and has worked for both Howden Insurance Brokers and the Kennedys Law Firm.

She currently serves as the Head of Claims at Klapton Insurance Company.

Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director

A Chartered Insurer and seasoned professional with over 20 years’ insurance and risk management experience. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Zambia, holds postgraduate diplomas from the CII (UK) and has undergone executive education courses at the University of Cape Town (GSB). 

She is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Zambia, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and a member of the Institute of Directors Zambia.

Chief Financial Officer

Makungu Mulando brings expertise in Financial & Management Accounting, Investment & Stock Broking, Pension Governance, Procurement & Contract Negotiations, Anti-money Laundering Compliance Fund Management, Asset – Liability matching, Leadership & Management skills as well as Corporate & Board Governance. 

In addition, he has experience in evaluating internal control systems/procedures, preparing for external audits with the objective of highlighting shortcomings and implementing necessary recommendations

Mulenga

Mulenga Kashiwa

Chief Operating Officer

Mulenga Kashiwa is a Chartered Insurer of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and possesses over 13 years’ experience in the Zambian Insurance Industry. He also holds an MBA in Management strategy from UNZA, an advanced certificate in Leadership and Management from Henley School of Business (SA) and currently pursuing his Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Lusaka. He has hands on experience in customer relationship management, international business strategy and dispute resolution.
